[ Rinoa, bright-eyed, is sitting in her hotel room. There's a Growlithe curled up on her lap, relaxed, and an egg in the background. ]

Guess what? [ She waits a second or two—presumably for guessing--before continuing. ]

I got a job! I've been working at the PokeCenter for a day or two now, helping out with the patients.

It's not bad, and I want to save up some money, just in case!

[ She smiles at the camera, and then looks over her shoulder casually at the egg. ]

I've also got a new member of my team on the way! I'm going to name him Watts, when he comes—

[ As if on cue, the egg starts shaking and cracking slightly. She gasps and picks up the 'Gear, spinning it around so that the hatching egg is in focus. And then— ]

Char!

Aww, look at you, little guy! I think Watts is the perfect name for you~

Char Charmander! [ ...If you can understand Pokemon? The newly-Christened Watts is trying to explain that she's a girl, kthx. Rinoa just thinks "he's" saying hi. ]

I guess that's true. If you named a really ugly Pokémon after them, they might not be too happy! [ Rinoa laughs.

Meanwhile, Watts is watching the two with interest. What are those colors for? ]

Are these attacks different from the ones they learn normally?

Or one that is particularly bad-tempered- Rosie, what are you doing?

[She is drawing, and said drawing looks somewhat like... a Charmander wearing a pink dress? Cecil just looks at her weirdly.]

...Some of them are. Rosie and Leviathan both managed to learn Ice Beam, and my Arcanine now knows Aerial Ace and Dig.

Is that...a picture? I didn't know Pokémon could draw! [ Rinoa has no idea what it's of, though, even though her art skills aren't much better.

Watts recognizes what it is, however, and she's pointing at the picture earnestly. ]

...Okay. So I should probably buy some ones that will be useful and different, then?

Rosie is a talented artist. She once painted a portrait of her sweetheart as a gift.

[Rosie gives paper!Charmander high heels and a purse. She'd add make-up and long hair, but considering her trainer...]

Try to find ones that cover your team's weaknesses. For example, if you teach Watts a Grass- or Electric-type attack, he'll be able to defend himself against Water-types.

Oh, really? [ Rinoa smiles. To Rosie, encouragingly: ] Hmm...what are you drawing there? [ She tilts her head slightly to get a better look at the picture. ]

They can learn attacks that aren't their element? Oh, cool! I'll look for them, thanks!

['I am drawing your newborn Pokémon, along with characteristics that humans associate with females, Miss. Please get the message.' ...But Rosie is too polite to say that, so she merely brings the drawing closer.]

Not all of them, but a few. They can be useful if you have no Pokémon of that element. And you are welcome.

[ It takes her a few moments of squinting before it occurs to her that that's a dress, and it's on a orange thing that looks a lot like a Charmander. Oh. ]

Oh, I see....is that Watts? I don't know if he'd appreciate a dress, though...

[ In turn, Watts starts talking excitedly, and so Rinoa has to change her assumptions. ] Or...maybe he is a dress kind of guy....

Yeah...I definitely have a few holes to fill, element-wise. [ Or, more accurately, she's only got two different elemental types in her team so far. Oh, well. ]

Well, pink might not be his col-Rosie?

[Sorry, Cecil, your Clefairy is too busy banging her head against your shoulder to answer. Luckily, he actually trusts her judgement (though Leviathan is obviously the one with all the color matching talent).]

...Did you point the Pokédex at him since he hatched?

Goldenrod can help with that. They also have attacks with special effects, such as a particularly powerful poison.

[ Watts would like to apologize on behalf of her clueless trainer, Rosie. :/ ]

...The Pokédex? No, why? [ Rinoa has no idea what that has to do with anything... ]

Ooh, special effects...Are they pricey?

[Apology accepted, but she keeps banging her head. At least her trainer is starting to get it?]

It can give you much information about your Pokémon: size, weight, natural habitat, rumors... [Gender...]

Direct attacks tend to be pricier, actually. But all cost less than P10000.

[ Step by step! Her trainer just gets too...set in her beliefs, sometimes. And be careful with your head! ]

Oh, okay. Let me check.... [ Give her a few minutes to fiddle with it and look at the information.

Okay, she's back. ] Um. I guess Watts is really a girl! [ Sheepish smile. The Charmander looks quite content. ]

[Victory fanfare! Rosie and Leviathan jump in the air in a very restrained manner as they cheer.]

Is that so? That would explain the dress... But that shouldn't stop you from calling her Watts. Leviathan does not mind having a masculine name, does she?

[Indeed she doesn't, but that's mostly because Cecil said that she was named after a king that ruled over the oceans. Kind of hard to dislike those kinds of associations.]

[ And now Watts is thanking them for their help, because that was some skillful maneuvering. ]

Yeah, that makes more sense. [ Rinoa laughs. ] And unless she has any problems with it, she'll probably stay Watts.

[ Watts makes no noise of protest, so Rinoa figures she's cool with the name. ]

[They were glad to help! Anything to protect a Pokémon from her trainer's silly ideas.]

She seems not to mind, at least. Then again, she must understand that you named her after someone important to you.

I bet she'd like Watts, if she met him. He's a good person to be named after!

Is that so? What is he like?

Well, I met Watts when I joined the Forest Owls, a rebel group in Timber dedicated to freeing our town from the tyranny of Deling and Galbadia! [ Yeah, that passion runs deep, man. Okay, back on topic again. ]

Watts was our information-getter. He's incredibly polite and kind, and he was really devoted to our cause. Along with Zone, he was one of my closest friends in Timber.

He sounds like a dependable friend. Did your group reach its goal?

He really is! [ Can you feel the love/admiration? ] Well, not yet...but we're getting there! We've come so far that we can't give up now!

I wish you luck. Fighting a corrupt and ill-intentioned ruler is far from easy.

It's worth it, though. [ Beaming. ]

...How about your Pokémon? I can guess who Leviathan's named after [ after all, it's kind of hard to forget a GF like that ], but what about the others?

Rosie was named after my wife; Lydia, Kayne and Firion were named after friends; Esuna and Flare, after spells; Avenger after a sword, and Leila was named by her previous trainer.

You have a wife? [ Yeah, she was caught by this—it's not that surprising, though, once she thinks about it. ]

Sounds like you've got a big team there!

A wife, and a son about your age, too. But they've not yet appeared in Johto.

That took some time. I only had four before Christmas, but my team doubled in size over the last month and a half.
