[ Rinoa, bright-eyed, is sitting in her hotel room. There's a Growlithe curled up on her lap, relaxed, and an egg in the background. ]

Guess what? [ She waits a second or two—presumably for guessing--before continuing. ]

I got a job! I've been working at the PokeCenter for a day or two now, helping out with the patients.

It's not bad, and I want to save up some money, just in case!

[ She smiles at the camera, and then looks over her shoulder casually at the egg. ]

I've also got a new member of my team on the way! I'm going to name him Watts, when he comes—

[ As if on cue, the egg starts shaking and cracking slightly. She gasps and picks up the 'Gear, spinning it around so that the hatching egg is in focus. And then— ]

Char!

Aww, look at you, little guy! I think Watts is the perfect name for you~

Char Charmander! [ ...If you can understand Pokemon? The newly-Christened Watts is trying to explain that she's a girl, kthx. Rinoa just thinks "he's" saying hi. ]

Congratulations! Watts does sound like a nice name.

Saving money is worth it, especially if you intend to visit Goldenrod's Department Store. It has the most variety out of all the stores.

[It's okay Rinoa, Yuffie did the exact same thing. Except she named her female Rattata 'Ratman'.]

Watts sounds like a great name the little guy! These guys sure are popular. Everyone wants one.

"Char-Char-Charmander"?

What? Give me a second, Flare--

['sup, Rinoa. Look at Riku and the rather large Charizard leeeaning over his shoulder.]

Looks like my Charizard wanted to see your Pokémon.

[And said Charizard is now rolling his eyes. You silly humans. Must he pantomime it?

Okay, fine. He'll point at the Charmander, then he'll point at Rinoa's...chest. Then he'll point back at the Charmander, grunting.

Yeah, Riku's totally lost.]

Watts! What a nice name!

[meanwhile, Carly's Xatu is hovering over her shoulder and looks at the gear.] [Or: "It's useless." Guess who's assumed a girl when he's a boy pokemon?]

Hah. You better be careful with that one. All the others I've seen so far are... a bit spunky.

[Toothless' Charmander attacked his face, and Sazh's Charmander just gave him hell. Naturally, this must run in the species.]

Train that Charmander well -- it becomes totally awesome. And I think you can even ride them!
[Guess who has a Charmander egg of his own? That's right, Scott. He also has another egg, which looks closer to hatching...
They're both really close to him. And resting like a scarf is his Furret.]

Thanks! [ Have a big smile. ] Watts is the name of a friend of mine back home, and it fits this guy, too~

[ In the background, Watts is still angrily protesting...but Rinoa's ignoring it because she thinks it's just excitement. ]

And yeah, that's what I've heard! When we get to Goldenrod, Quistis and I are definitely shopping there.

[ ...'Ratman'? A+, Yuffie, A+. ]

I think he likes it, too! [ More protesting, which she takes as agreement. ]

They are really cute, though! ...And he was pretty cheap.

I also named a few of my Pokémon after loved ones. Hopefully none of them will mind, if they arrive.

[Leviathan the Feebas must have heard those protests, because she jumped in her trainer's arms and asking Watts what's wrong.]

They even sell attacks that you can teach to your Pokémon. And their clothing and make-up sections are better than every single other store in Johto put together.

He's saying hi!

[ "No, I'm saying that I'm a girl!" ]

[ ...Did that Pokémon just point at her chest? No, she must've been imagining it. ]

Oh, here! I'll bring him closer so your Charizard can get a better look.

[ She gets up, setting the Growlithe on the floor before ushering over the Charmander for the Charizard to see.

Watts, for her part, is exasperated but grateful that someone noticed. ]

Isn't it?

[ Watts is interested and moves forward to get a better look at the screen. ]

[ Translation: "You too?" ]

Oh, it'll be fine! I like spunky~

[ Not that she understands Fang's meaning, but oh well. ]

Ride this little guy? [ Rinoa looks from the 'Gear to the Charmander and then back again. ]

...I don't think I'd fit.

I don't think they would! It's like a sign of affection.

[ A slightly-irritated Watts pokes her head in behind her trainer's, looking at Leviathan for a few moments before explaining (again) that she's a girl and her trainer is stupid. ]

You can...buy attacks? I thought they just learned them. [ She's definitely filing away the information about clothing and make-up, though. ]

It might depend on the Pokémon named after them, of course.

[Leviathan sighs, disappears for a minute, and comes back with... Rosie, who's holding a sheet of paper and some crayons?]

Some attacks can be found on disks; Pokémon merely need to touch them, as long as they are compatible. Gym leaders also give them if you win.

Hah, I hope ya do.

Fine by me.

[Flare, once again, rolls his eyes.]

[And he's pointing at Rinoa's chest, then nodding. And then he points to the Charmander. THEN he points to Riku, shakes his head, and points back to the Charmander.

Yeah, by now, Riku's pretty much lost.]

I don't know what's gotten into him.

You can understand him? [ Is looking at you in wonder, Rinoa. ] Hi, Watts.

Well... [ She's...basking in that, a little. ] Not exactly, but you can kind of figure out what they're trying to say if you pay attention.

[ Yeah, not even close. Watts looks at the screen before raising a hand/paw/thing in greeting. And then letting out another noise of frustration. ]

[ Rinoa's just kind of...watching in fascination. She has absolutely no idea what he's doing, either, but at least she's not the only one confused. ]

You mean he doesn't normally act like this? I wonder what's wrong...

[ Or, in human-speak: "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" Clueless human...

But all that does is get Watt's trainer to smile at her. ] Aww, are you trying to make a friend?

I guess that's true. If you named a really ugly Pokémon after them, they might not be too happy! [ Rinoa laughs.

Meanwhile, Watts is watching the two with interest. What are those colors for? ]

Are these attacks different from the ones they learn normally?

He seems... frustrated now.

[she nods!] How'd you get the idea?

[The Xatu nods.] [Or: "She thinks I'm a girl."]
